1. Legal requirements:
o To become a driving instructor you must meet the following requirements:
o You must have held a British or European driving licence for at least 3 years 6 months.
o Not have been disqualified from driving in the last 4 years.
o You must be a fit and proper person with no criminal convictions unless already spent under the rehabilitation of offenders' act 1974
o You should have good eyesight and be able to read old style number plates at 27.5 metres (90 feet) with or without glasses/contact lenses.


2.The ADI theory test:
This test consists of 100 questions that must be completed in 90 minutes. You need to achieve an overall pass rate of 85% to be successful. The test is separated into four areas. These are:

o Road procedure
o Traffic signs and signals, pedestrians, mechanical principles and car control.
o Disabilities, law and driving test.
o Instructional techniques.

It is possible to achieve an overall pass mark of 85% but still fail the test. This is because you must achieve a minimum of 80% in all four groups.

3. Test of driving ability:
This is an advanced driving test where you must:

o Demonstrate expertise in the control and handling of the vehicle.
o Use correct road procedures.
o Show the ability to anticipate the actions of other road users and take the appropriate action.
o Have good sound judgement of speed, timing and distance.
o Demonstrate consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users.

4. Quality of instruction:
The purpose of this test is to assess the quality of your instruction and your ability to pass on your knowledge and skills on to the pupil. The test is split into 2 sections each lasting approximately 30 minutes. For the first part (phase 1) you will be asked to demonstrate your ability by giving driving instruction to an examiner who will take on the role of a pupil who will be at the beginning or of very limited driving experience. For the second part (phase 2) they will take on the role of a more advanced pupil who may have a test booked or could have previously failed a test.

The examiner for both phase 1 and 2 will tell you which lesson to conduct and direct you around the route.
